Compression Device FAQs
-
The Dolphin™ Ring Cutter is designed to cut rings up to 6 mm thick and 10 mm wide, accommodating most standard ring sizes. For rings wider than 10 mm, you can make two cuts—one on each side—to remove the ring, with a maximum supported width of 20 mm.
-
A flashing amber information light, accompanied by a buzzer, indicates improper use of the device. If the issue is not corrected, the Dolphin™ Ring Cutter may pause operation for 10 seconds, during which the entire progress indicator will illuminate amber.
Common causes of this warning include:
Insufficient lubricant applied to the cutting area
Moving or shifting the ring cutter during the cutting process
Applying excessive force or pushing the cutting disc too hard into the ring
-
For performance and infection control, the AssureCUT discs are single-patient use. Most difficult metals, such as Tungsten, Titanium, Cobalt, etc, can not be pried apart and require two cuts to be removed. Used discs will contain ring debris and lubricant residue. Reusing discs will void the Ring Cutter warranty and also negatively impact cutting performance.
AssureCUT™ discs are designed for single-patient use to ensure optimal performance and maintain infection control standards. Rings made from hard metals such as Tungsten, Titanium, or Cobalt typically require two cuts for removal, as they cannot be pried apart.
Used discs have reduced diamond coating, making them less effective for cutting. They may also retain ring debris and lubricant residue, which can further impair cutting performance. Reusing discs will void the Ring Cutter’s warranty and will significantly compromise cutting efficiency.
-
Yes, the Dolphin™ is equipped with an integrated, rechargeable medical-grade lithium-ion battery. It also features an option for direct plug-in use, ensuring the device is always ready when needed.
-
A fully charged Dolphin™ Ring Cutter provides up to one hour of total cutting time. If the battery is depleted, the device can still be used while plugged into a power source, ensuring uninterrupted operation.
When not in use, a fully charged battery can hold its charge for over 6 months. However, the battery will gradually discharge over time. For optimal performance, we recommend periodically checking the charge level and fully recharging the device as needed, especially before relying on battery-only use after extended storage.
-
A full charge is approximately 2.5 hours. We recommend that the device be recharged fully before storing it. During charging, all three lights will flash, and when fully charged, this flashing will cease.
-
○ 3 bars indicate = 70-100% charge remaining
○ 2 bars indicate = 30-70% charge remaining
○ 1 bar indicates = 1-30% charge remaining
-
The lubricant light is on a 30-second timer. When the blue light flashes, apply 2 well-targeted sprays of the lubricant to the cutting disc. Cutting can be continued while the blue light flashes and while applying lubricant. If cutting is stopped while applying lubrication, the blue light will continue to flash when cutting is resumed until it has completed 5 flashes. These flashes can be ignored as only 2 well-targeted sprays of lubricant are required every 30 seconds.
-
No, Ring Rescue lubricant is specially formulated for use with this device. It works to reduce heat generation and provide efficient cutting. The use of an alternate lubricant will void the Ring Cutter warranty.
-
The guard moves slowly to allow the operator to position it precisely.
-
Advance the guard until you observe it touching the ring. The guard automatically stops when it makes contact with the ring and will not damage the AssureCUT disc or ring. When the disc has made contact with the ring, cutting can begin.
-
Near the end of the cut, the cutting sound often changes; this does not necessarily mean the cut is complete, and continuing to cut until the progress indicator reads 100% is the most reliable way to ensure cutting is complete.
-
No. Cutting is fully automatic. The Dolphin™ Ring Cutter regulates pressure internally, using the automated guard to apply a controlled force between the ring and the cutting disc.
-
Ring Rescue products come with a 1-year warranty.
The manufacturing facility located in Dartmouth Nova Scotia performs both warranty and service repairs.

The Compression Device is recommended when there is no finger injury, offering a non-destructive method for ring removal. This approach provides the best chance to preserve valuable or sentimental rings intact.
-
Yes, it is a Class 1 Medical Device registered with the FDA. To visit the Establishment Registration & Device Listing, you can do so here.
-
Yes—the device reliably reduces finger size 100% of the time. However, successful ring removal also depends on the user’s technique.
Ring Rescue + You = Success
Our device provides the best chance for non-destructive ring removal. With proper training, users achieve an 80% success rate in removing rings without cutting.Beginners typically start with about a 60% success rate, which improves to 80% as they become more skilled with the procedure.
Note: For an unaffected finger, one round of compression typically reduces the finger size by approximately one full ring size.
-
Yes, the compression device has a 4-year lifespan and can be used for 100s of ring removals.
-
Before and after each use, the device and its components should be cleaned with 70% alcohol or 0.5% accelerated hydrogen peroxide wipes.
Do not submerge in water or autoclave.
-
Yes, ICD-10-CM Billable Diagnosis Code W49.04XA can be used for the device
-
Not all rings can be removed non-destructively.
While soft tissues can be compressed and fluid (edema) displaced, bone cannot be reduced in size. In osteoarthritis cases where knuckle enlargement has occurred and the bone is larger than the ring, non-destructive removal is not possible.
In situations where there is a severe finger injury, a ring cutter will likely be necessary for safe removal.
-
Yes, the duration the ring has been stuck plays a key role in determining how many rounds of compression may be required to reduce finger swelling and increase the chance of successful removal.
Acute cases (less than 2 weeks): typically require 1 round of compression
Chronic cases (more than 2 weeks): usually require 2–3 rounds
"Angry finger" (irritated or swollen due to at-home removal attempts): typically requires 2–3 rounds
Understanding the case history helps guide the most effective and efficient approach.
-
1 round of compression = 5 minutes
-
We recommend performing no more than 5 rounds of compression. While compression is effective at reducing finger size, there is a natural limit to tissue shrinkage, beyond which the results begin to plateau.
-
After completing a round of compression, you should wait just long enough to assess the finger—typically no more than a few seconds. Then, reapply the device with a quarter turn and begin the next round by pumping it back up into the target pressure zone.
The entire transition between rounds should take no more than 20 seconds.
